You may have wondered why some people possess a brighter smile while there are others who put in a lot of effort but can never achieve the same results. You may have also consulted your dentist or may have received a few tips from friends on how to get whiter teeth. However a great smile can be achieved by following only a few steps.

Taking time to care for your teeth

You should know that it takes just two or three minutes to adequately brush your teeth but there are people who only spend a few seconds to brush. Brushing your teeth is the most important thing in achieving a brighter smile. This is basically needed to get rid of bacteria as there are billions of bacteria that live in the mouth. They live on the foods that are left on the teeth and produce acids as a by-product of feasting. It is this acid that destroys the enamel and creates cavities. Brushing will remove most of the bacteria on your teeth.

Flossing

You may already be aware that you should floss at least once a day, but you should also know the reason behind it. This involves food particles stuck between teeth – these are usually difficult to get to with a toothbrush. If they are allowed to remain for a long time bacteria would invade and destroy the gum tissue and also the bones and ligaments that support your teeth. Flossing will help to remove food particles from between your teeth.

Diet

You should know that there are also foods other than candy that create tooth decay. Bacteria basically feed on sugar from sweet food. However the bacterial also uses other foods that contain sugar or carbohydrates. This would include peanut butter, potato chips, crackers and other similar foods. The solution to this problem is brushing your teeth after every meal that would remove the left over food particles that the bacteria feed on. However, washing down the foods with liquids will also ensure less food remains on your teeth.
